Whipps Wilderness Safaris began operating Madisa Camp in partnership with the Sorris Sorris Conservancy in 2014.
Work started with the construction of the round rock pool, which remains one of the camp’s best-known features. Safari Tents were added as the camp developed, creating a comfortable option for guests who prefer a bed and linen.
Development chronology
Whipps Wilderness Safaris began operating Madisa Camp in partnership with the Sorris Sorris Conservancy. Work started with the round rock pool.
The Overland Campsites and shared ablutions were completed.
The nine Private Campsites and elevated bathrooms were renovated.
Today Madisa offers nine Private Campsites, five Overland Campsites, five Double Safari Tents and three Family Safari Tents.
Conservation & community
Madisa operates as a joint-venture tourism project within the Sorris Sorris Conservancy.
The partnership connects tourism with local participation and the long-term care of the surrounding landscape.
The camp lies within the range of desert-adapted elephants and other wildlife. Responsible tourism, respectful wildlife viewing and careful use of water, wood and solar power are central to how Madisa operates.
Community impactThe people behind Madisa
People make camp feel personal.
Claire Whipp and her father, William Whipp, founded Whipps Wilderness Safaris and have led the development of Madisa in partnership with the Sorris Sorris Conservancy. Claire’s husband, Brett, later joined the team as Operations Manager. Together, this team has grown Madisa and WWS into a diverse tourism operation focused on authentic wilderness experiences, conservation and community partnerships.
Petra and George manage Madisa Camp and lead the team on the ground. They oversee daily operations and help create the relaxed, welcoming atmosphere for which the camp is known.
Nadia handles reservations and assists guests with bookings and travel planning before arrival. Fluent in three languages, Nadia ensures the planning process is as smooth and welcoming as the stay itself.
Alta manages marketing and events for Whipps Wilderness Safaris from Swakopmund and supports the promotion of Madisa and the Madisa Challenge.

Madisa is a relaxed camp in a remote natural setting. The aim is simple: offer guests a comfortable base in Damaraland, create meaningful local benefits and treat the wildlife and landscape with respect.
